Press release: Open Days

A total immersion at Brussels University Hospital to attract new talent

Brussels, 3 April 2025 – Brussels University Hospital (H.U.B) is today opening its doors to future nurses and technicians, as well as to the sector’s young professionals. This unique event aims to offer them a total immersion experience within the medical and nursing teams of four Erasmus Hospital departments: cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology and neurology.

From theory to practice

Rather than adopting a purely theoretical approach, the H.U.B has opted for a practical approach to enable participants to experience the authentic reality of hospital life in total transparency. This initiative is part of a pragmatic approach to give genuine insight into daily life at a hospital while stimulating friendly dialogue between present and future health professionals. Under the slogan "Grab your gown and join us", this year’s event stresses the spirit of immersion, teamwork, professionalism and the sense of being a part of a committed community.

The day’s programme

Participants will be divided up into small groups to facilitate quality interactions with the care staff without disturbing the patients. Each of these groups will visit two departments in the course of the day which will include a presentation of the departments by the medical and nursing teams followed by the immersion in the various units, including the cardiology room, the endoscopy section and gastroenterology hospitalisation unit, the nephrology dialysis clinic and the neurology neurotechnical unit. A meeting with Human Resources is also scheduled to discuss career prospects and opportunities for professional training at the H.U.B. The programme also includes informal moments such as a welcoming breakfast at the departments and a convivial lunch over which visitors and members of the medical teams will have time to talk.

"Students and young professionals must be able to imagine themselves in a stimulating and welcoming environment. This immersion will enable them to experience interdisciplinary cooperation, better understand the challenges and rewards of the job but also and above all to get to know our dynamic, motivated teams who are all experts in their field.” Carine Goossens, Head of the Hospitalisation Department, H.U.B Nursing Department Management

Attracting and retaining talent for professions in demand

Faced with the persistent shortage of nurses and medical technicians, the H.U.B is increasing its initiatives to attract and retain new talent in these areas. By highlighting the opportunities for a hospital career and encouraging direct contact with the teams in place, this event aims to inspire vocations and boost the attractiveness of health professions.

We want students and young professionals to be able to project themselves into their future career by experiencing a genuine immersion within our departments. We are focusing on proximity, exchange and transparency to give them a very real idea of hospital life. We hope this year’s event will be the first in a long series of events in our various institutions, also permitting an immersion experience in paediatric and cancer care.” Ann De Permentier, H.U.B Director of Human Resources
This event is a formidable opportunity to discover the wealth and diversity of our professions. By opening our doors we are enabling our guests to understand the realities in the field, to ask their questions and to feel they are being supported in choosing their career.” Nadine Vanbossuyt, Head of the Nursing Department

"Bring your balls": An event to raise awareness and remove taboos surrounding men’s health as part of the Movember action month
Brussels, 18 November 2024 – As part of Movember, a month dedicated to raising awareness of men’s health, the Jules Bordet Institute is organising the “Bring your balls” event on Monday 25th November. An invitation for men, both young and not so young, to find out more about men’s health in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere over a game of pétanque. This unique event aims to encourage men to open up and freely discuss health issues on which they too often remain silent: men’s mental health, the side effects of male cancers, and prevention. The concept originated in a unique collaboration between care staff and patients who also want to break taboos.
