Tender loving care for teddy at the Teddy Bear Hospital!

On 16 September 2023 the Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital (within the Brussels University Hospital) will be holding its 4th Teddy Bear Hospital event. The concept? Throughout the afternoon, as budding nurses and with the support of the "teddy bear specialists," children will making the best decisions in the interests of their ailing teddies.  An event with a twofold objective: to promote awareness of the hospital environment and to encourage preventive action in the field of health.

A hospital designed for children!

The idea behind the Teddy Bear Hospital is to reproduce as faithfully as possible, but in a way appropriate for children, the atmosphere of the hospital and medical environment in the form of a pathway that is both fun and educational. Specifically, children between the ages of 3 and 12 accompanied by their parents are invited to bring their sick or injured teddies to this mini hospital dedicated exclusively to them!

A genuine care pathway that is fun as well as educational

With teddy's health card in their hands and depending on the type of care the teddy bear needs, your child will visit the various departments and meet the various healthcare professionals - or "teddy bear specialists" as we call them!  Paediatrics, tests, vaccinations, surgery, dermatology, plaster casts, nursing, resuscitation, wound dressings… every form of care will be presented to ensure optimal care for the teddy patient. Three new features this year: a stand dedicated to mental health, a stand dedicated to siblings, and a stand dedicated to newborn care. At each stop along the way, the child will come to understand the importance and role of each department; and as at the hospital, the teddy's health record will be completed.  By making the child the key player in the teddy bear's care pathway, he or she will be able to get to know this still largely unknown world that can be a source of anxiety and increase their knowledge and understanding of health. The last stop along the way will be the sensory garden where children will be treated to light refreshments and soft drinks and will be awarded a diploma.

Stronger partnerships for the 4th edition of the Teddy Bear Hospital

Coordinated by the HUDERF for the fourth year running, the Teddy Bear Hospital is starting a new chapter in its history by also stimulating collaboration with the teams that make up the Brussels University Hospital (H.U.B), with for the first time the participation of a care team from the maternity and pediatrics departments of the Erasmus Hospital in the Teddy Bear Hospital course. Once again this year, the BEMSA ULB committee of medical students will reinforce the project, with the aim of raising awareness among tomorrow's caregivers of the specificities of paediatric patient contact.

Also present on the day will be associations and artists such as the Docteurs ZinZins clowns who the children will encounter along the way as well as the Stormtroopers from the Star Wars saga from the Fan Wars Garrison for a souvenir photo with the children!
